Charith Abhayaratne

Charith Abhayaratne serves as a Lecturer in image and vision engineering in the Department of EEE at the USFD. He received the B.E. (Honors) degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Adelaide, Australia, in 1998 and the Ph.D. degree in electronic and electrical engineering from the University of Bath, UK, in 2002. He was a recipient of the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2002–2004), which was spent at the National Research Institute for Computer Science and Control (INRIA, Sophia Antipolis) in France and at the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI) in The Netherlands. He was involved in MPEG exploration activities on wavelet video coding under the scalable video coding standardization activity. His research interests include computer vision, video analysis, video coding, content-based video retrieval, and visual content adaptation. He has been a Reviewer for leading IEEE/IET/ACM/SPIE journals and conferences, UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC), and book publishers. He has been involved in technical program committees for several leading international conferences and served as Session Chairs. He serves as the United Kingdom’s Liaison Officer for the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP).
