Maria Bokarewa has been a Research Fellow at the University of GÖteborg, Sweden, since 1998. She graduated from Moscow Medical Academy in 1986 with a degree of physician, and specialized further in rheumatology. Between finishing in Moscow and starting at Göteborg, she spent 6 years at the Karolonska Institute in Stockholm doing her Ph.D. studies. At GÖteborg, she started working in the Professor Andrzej Tarkowski Group conducting research into the immunoregulation and therapy in experimental and human rheumatoid arthritis. She became the Associated Professor in rheumatology 2004 and now established her research group with main interest in the role of proto-oncogenes in autoimmune inflammation. The research is supported by the Swedish Medical Research Council, the Swedish Association, and by the Foundation for Strategic Research. At present, the group includes 5 post-doctoral and 5 Ph.D. students. Her publication list consists of 61 original research articles and 5 reviews. She is a Member of the working group of the Swedish Society of Rheumatology and the Swedish National Board of Health and Wealthfare, evaluating the guidlines and recommendations for pharmacological treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, an Ad hoc referee for Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, Arthritis and Rheumatism, Arthritis Care and Research, Journal of Rheumatology, Rheumatology, Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology, Inflammation Research, Scandinavian Journal of Immunology, Arthritis Research and Therapy, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Diabetologia, FEBS lett, Microbial Pathogenesis, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, Bone, Journal of Vascular Research.
