Joonas Sirola

Dr. Joonas Sirola was born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1978. He graduated with a M.D. degree in 2004 and received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Surgery, University of Kuopio, Kuopio, Finland, in 2004 in Orthopedics and traumatology. He is a specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology. During the years 2000-2004, he was a researcher at the OSTPRE study in University of Kuopio. His primary research interests are diagnostics and epidemiology of osteoporosis and fractures. His recent research has been also focused on bone quality, muscle strength and muscle performance. Currently, he is performing multidisciplinary research and supervising Ph.D. students in the Bone and Cartilage Research Unit (BCRU) at the University of Eastern Finland in addition to the clinical work in Kuopio University Hospital, Department of Orthopedics. He is a board member and treasurer of the Finnish Bone Society and has been awarded as the young investigator of the year in 2009 in his hospital district.
