Francesco Aymerich is an Associate Professor of machine design in the Department of Mechanical, Chemical and Materials Engineering, University of Cagliari, Cagliari, Italy. He graduated in structural engineering at the same university where he completed his Ph.D. degree in the subject of notch sensitivity of composite laminates under fatigue loads. He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering as a Researcher in 1993 and as an Associate Professor in 2005. He currently teaches courses on machine design, mechanics of materials, and fracture mechanics in composites. His research interest is primarily focused on the numerical simulation and the experimental analysis of the damage and fracture behaviour of composite materials and components subjected to static, fatigue, and impact loads. He has been working as a Visiting Researcher at the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USA, and in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK. He has participated in a number of national and international funded projects and has served in the scientific and organizing committees of various international conferences. He is the author or coauthor of more than 120 papers in the field of composite materials published in international journals and in conference proceedings.
