Yiannis Kourkoutas holds a degree in chemistry (1997) and he received his Ph.D. degree in food biotechnology in 2002 from the University of Patras, Patras, Greece. He continued postdoctoral studies at the University of Ulster, Coleraine, UK (2002-2003), and at the University of Patras, Greece (2003 to 2007). From 2007, he is an Academic Staff at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Democritus University of Thrace in Komotini, Greece. He has authored 71 papers in peer-reviewed journals, most of them focusing on food chemistry, applied microbiology and molecular biotechnology, fermentation technology, and functional foods/probiotics. He has also published 14 chapters in books, 95 conference proceedings, and 3 patents. He has participated in the organizing committee of many international conferences and has been invited as a Plenary Keynote Lecturer in several conferences. Finally, he has served as Evaluator of research proposals in a high number of national and European calls.
