Ibrahim El Sayed

Ibrahim El Sayed was born in Menoufia, Egypt, in 1963. He studied chemistry at Menoufia University, Menoufia, Egypt, between 1981 and 1985, and graduated with first class honors. In 1986, he was appointed to his first post as a Demonstrator in (Oxford dictionary) organic chemistry at Menoufia University, and then he received both the M.S. (1989) and the Ph.D. (1994) degrees from Menoufia University and Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark. He was promoted to an Associate Professor, in 2000, and a Full Professor of organic and medicinal chemistry at MU, in June 2005. After his Ph.D. degree, he spent many years of postdoctoral positions at the University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria (1995), University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan (1996-1997), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Tsukuba, Japan (1997–1999), Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden ( 2001-2002), University of Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium (2003–2006), and Okayama University, Okayama, Japan (May 2008–March 2009). He was a Visiting Professor at the Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, Denmark (December 2001), University of Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium (May 2007–July 2007), and Okayama University ( from August 2012 to September 2012). He has published over 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals and books such as the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Journal of American Chemical Society, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Journal of Organic Chemistry, Organic Letters, European Journal of Organic Chemistry, and Chemical and Engineering News. He has been invited and has presented his research work at many international conferences and workshops. El Sayed is the President of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Alumni Association in Egypt (JSPSAAE), Head of research and postgraduate studies at the Department of Chemistry, MU (since 2006), Member of the jury of M.S. and Ph.D. studies in Minia University, Minia, Egypt, and Tanta University, Tanta, Egypt, and a referee for several international journals. His current research interests include design, synthesis, and development of novel anticancer and antimalarial and antischistosomal products derived from plant sources.
