Shivalingappa K. Swamynathan

Dr. Shivalingappa (Shiva) Swamynathan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthamology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He also holds a secondary appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department Cell Biology and Physiology, University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Swamynathan got his Ph.D. from the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, India. Following graduation, he worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology. He then accepted a post at the National Eye Institute, where he was first an Intramural Research Training Associate and then a Staff Scientist. Dr. Swamynathan focuses his research on the regulation of gene expression during ocular surface development. His recent studies revealed the many important functions of Kr├╝ppel-like transcription factors KLF4 and KLF5 in the mouse ocular surface. Dr. Swamynathan is a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He has received many honors, including the National Eye Institute Career Development (K22) Award, the Best Scientific Paper, 2009 Asia-ARVO Meeting, and the Indian National Merit Fellowship. He serves as an ad hoc reviewer for many journals, including the Journal of Molecular Biology, Experimental Eye Research, Ocular surface, and Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, amongst others.
