Vemu Lakshmi serves as a Professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology, Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences Punjagutta, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. Dr. Lakshmi, a medical graduate from Osmania Medical College, did her postgraduation in medical microbiology from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Karnataka. She then joined the NIMS in the capacity of Senior Resident at the Department of Microbiology. She has been successful in acquiring national and international projects and several equipment for the department through these projects. She worked as the President of the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists (Andhra Pradesh Chapter) 2007–2008. She has 15 international and 75 national publications. She has been elected as the Associate Editor for the Indian Journal of Medical Microbiologists, an official journal of the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists. She has been involved in several teaching programs of the institute. She has undertaken several projects both intradepartmental and with the other national institutes like ICMR, ASCI, DRDE, and DBT, and International Organizations like NIH, CGHR, and GIH. She was the Regional Coordinator for HIV serosurveillance in the state of Andhra Pradesh under NACO/ Government of India program since 1998 to 2006. She has successfully guided 5 Ph.D. projects and at present has 1 student registered. She is one of the faculties for the M.tech. biotechnology course in collaboration with the University of Hyderabad. She has organised several workshops and CMEs in microbiology, delivered guest lectures focusing on rapid diagnostic and technical aspects in microbiology, and infection control measures.
