Subbiah Pugazhenthi, holder of Ph.D. degree, is currently an Associate Professor of medicine at the Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes Division, the University of Colorado Denver. His research interests include apoptosis, transcription factors, diabetes, pancreatic beta cells, and neurons and oxidative stress. The focus of Dr. Pugazhenthi's research is “Transcriptional regulation of cytoprotective genes in pancreatic beta cells and hippocampal neurons.” He is interested in understanding the molecular mechanism of beta-cell apoptosis in diabetes and neuronal dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease by a functional genomics approach. Studies are being carried out to examine the regulation of gene expression in cell culture and animal models using laser capture microdissection and GeXP multiplex array. Strategies are being developed for viral vector mediated gene transfer. The long-term goal is to enhance cell survival through modulation of transcription factors under conditions of stress.
