Ramune Morkuniene was born in Marijampole, Lithuania, in 1968. She received the Master of Pharmacy degree and the Ph.D. degree from the Kaunas University of Medicine, Lithuania, in 1991 and 2000, respectively. Since 1991, Morkuniene is with the Biochemistry laboratory, Institute for Biomedical Research, Kaunas University of Medicine. In 1994 and 1997, she was a Research Fellow at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Bordeaux University II, France. From 2006 to 2010, Morkuniene was an Associate Professor of the Department of Biochemistry, Kaunas University of Medicine, Lithuania. Presently, she is a Professor of Department of Biochemistry, Medical Academy, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. She participates in studies and lecturing of biological chemistry, medical chemistry, chemistry of biological structures, and antioxidant protection of human organism courses for students of medicine, pharmacy, and odontology faculties. Area of research interests of Morkuniene is investigation of the mechanisms of cell death during heart ischemia/reperfusion; investigation of the role of mitochondria in the apoptotic and necrotic processes; investigation of the mechanisms of the protective effect of nitric oxide and estradiol on cell viability and mitochondria during pathological conditions; investigation of toxic effects of beta amyloid peptides on neuronal cells. Morkuniene is a Member of ISHR/European Section, Lithuanian Biochemical Society and Lithuanian Neuroscience Association.
