Giorgos E. Nicolaou
Giorgos E. Nicolaou serves as an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Democritus University of Thrace (Greece) and is responsible for the Nuclear Technology Laboratory. He is a physicist with a Ph.D. degree in nuclear sciences from the University of Surrey (UK) and an MBA from the University of Sunderland (UK). He acted as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Surrey (1985-1986). Then, he worked at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission as a Postdoctoral Fellow (JRC/Ispra, Italy, from 1986 to 1989), as a Visiting Research Scientist (JRC-ITU/Karlsruhe, Germany, from 1989 to 1990), and as a Research Scientist (JRC-ITU/Karlsruhe, Germany, from 1990 to 1999) with activities in nuclear waste management. His present research activities are emerging nuclear fuel cycles/reactor safety, nuclear waste management, and transmutation strategies, nuclear safeguards, radiation protection, metrology of nuclear radiations, environmental radioactivity, and nondestructive testing. He has collaborated with the IAEA and EURATOM, the nuclear industry KWU, Belgonucleaire, Nuclear Fuel Industry, GNS and CRIEPI, the universities of Surrey, Imperial College, Hokaido, Bergamo, Verona, and Pavia, the research centers ILL, CEA, SCK Mol, FZK, and ECN, Istituto Superiore di Sanita, and NCSR Demokritos in Europe and Japan.
