Lazaros I. Sakkas currently works as a Professor of medicine and rheumatology, Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences, University of Thessaly (Volos, Greece), and Chairman, Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, University General Hospital of Larissa (Larissa, Greece). Dr. Sakkas has been trained in internal medicine and rheumatology and gained experience in rheumatology in Greece, UK, and USA. He has gained hands-on research experience and training in molecular biology and immunology in well-known centers, at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Medical and Dental Schools, University of London (London, UK), and Temple University School of Medicine (Philadelphia, PA, USA). Apart from teaching to medical students, doctors in training, postgraduate students, Dr. Sakkas has a heavy clinical (rheumatology and internal medicine) hospital practice as a chairman of the department. His main contribution to research has been polymorphisms of immune genes in rheumatic diseases, sequencing of HLA-class-II genes and T cell receptor (TCR) genes in rheumatoid arthritis, sequencing TCR and IL-4 gene in systemic sclerosis, early HLA-class I genotyping by PCR, B cell phenotyping and intracellular signal pathways, immunohistology and cytokines in osteoarthritis, and joint imaging in erosive osteoarthritis. He served as guest editor of books and few Journals, Editor of the Hellenic Rheumatology and then Mediterranean Journal of Rheumatology, and editorial board member in many journals. He also served as a reviewer in many journals. He has published more than 130 English papers, more than 60 Greek language papers, and chapters in books and he has lectured in many national and international conferences/congresses.
