Babu Z. Fathepure
Babu Z. Fathepure, an environmental microbiologist and a microbial ecologist, received a Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. He did his postdoctoral work at the Department of Crop and Soil Science and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University in 1985–1987 and 1987–1991, respectively. He joined Conoco/Du Pont Co., as a Senior Scientist and worked there from 1991 to 1994. Fathepure was responsible for corporate in situ and ex situ bioremediation projects. In 1995, he joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor as an Associate Research Scientist. There, he researched on reductive dechlorination of chlorinated hydrocarbons and mentored both undergraduate and graduate students. In 2000, Fathepure joined the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Oklahoma State University as an Assistant Professor and became an Associate Professor in 2006. His current research emphasis is on microbial ecology, physiology, and genomics of hydrocarbon degrading organisms in hypersaline environments as well as identification of lignin-degrading genes in bacteria using genomic and proteomic approaches. Fathepure teaches microbial ecology and environmental microbiology courses to undergraduate and graduate students.
