Giulia Freer was born in La Spezia, Italy, in 1962. She received a degree in biology (summa cum laude) and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Pisa, Italy in 1986 and 1992, respectively. She was a student from 1990 till 1991 at the Department of Pathology, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo, USA (under the supervision of Professor T. J. Braciale). She performed research as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institut für Experimentelle Immunologie, Universitätsspital Zürich, Germany (Professor R. Zinkernagel and Professor H. Hengartner) from 1992 to 1994. Since 1992, Dr. Freer has been a Tenure Track Researcher at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Pisa; she teaches virology and microbiology in several courses and is responsible for the Immunology Section in the Virology Unit, University Hospital of Pisa.
