Juan C Laguna

University of Barcelona, Spain

J. C. Laguna obtained his degree in pharmacy in 1981, and his Ph.D. degree in pharmacy in 1996 at the University of Barcelona. From 1987 to 1988 and 1989, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Pharmacology Department of the University of Connecticut Health Center (USA), under the supervision of Dr. D.C. Cinti, working in the characterization of the liver fatty acid elongation and desaturation systems. In 1987, he became a Lecturer in pharmacology at the University of Barcelona, and Full Professor (Chair in pharmacology) in 2003. Since 1989, he has been the Principal Investigator of a research team involved in the study of lipid and glucose metabolism, metabolic diseases, and their pharmacological prevention and treatment. We work in three well-differentiated research fields: (a) changes in monocyte/macrophages gene expression induced by metabolic alterations; (b) molecular mechanisms involved in the production of fat liver and hypertriglyceridemia; (c) characterization of experimental models of metabolic syndrome: rats supplemented with fructose. He serves as a Members of the UB’s Institute of Biomedicine and CIBER of Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition, from the Instituto Carlos III, Team group 2009 SGR 0413 from the Generalitat de Catalunya.
