Alberto Reis was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1963. He received the M.S. degree (biotechnology, biochemical engineering) and the Ph.D. degree (biotechnology, biochemical engineering) from the Technical University of Lisbon in 1991 and 2001, respectively. In 2001, he was appointed as a Researcher at the National Institute of Engineering, Technology, and Innovation (INETI) in Lisbon, now the National Laboratory for Energy and Geology (LNEG). He was awarded as a postdoc at the Birmingham University (UK) for one year. He currently conducts research at the Bioenergy Unit of LNEG being a Coordinator of the Bioengineering Program at the same institute. He is mainly interested in microalgae biotechnology with special emphasis on photobioreactors and fine chemicals such as pigments and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Gas mass transfer on bioreactors as well as flow cytometry as a tool for monitoring microbial cultures in near real time are deserving also more and more attention. He authored over 40 scientific publications.
